Way back in 1530, something happened that would change the world. While the century may have been best known for the painting of the Mona Lisa or for Spain's colonisation of the Americas, perhaps the biggest event - at least for online bingo players - was the beginning of an Italian ball draw called 'Lo Guioco del Lotto D'Italia'.

This Italian Lottery was played each Saturday night – it still is even today – where players would gather round and tick off numbers as they were announced by a ye olde bingo caller. France, swiftly followed by Germany caught the bingo bug from Italy, proving the game was quite the hit. Of course, this game wasn't actually called bingo, but beano!

After all that, it was an American that later came up with the term bingo. In 1929, a toyshop owner named Edwin S. Lowe coined the phrase bingo after watching a game in action at a carnival in Georgia. After hiring someone to make the bingo cards, this good man set about selling the game to the people of the USA.

History was made
